Renting a Camper in WA: Costs, Providers & Comparison

Im Campervan durch Western Australia.

Choosing the right vehicle is the most critical and expensive decision you’ll make for your perfect Western Australia itinerary. The distances are massive: a road trip from Perth to Exmouth and back easily clocks in at over 3,000 kilometers (around 1,860 miles). So, if you’re planning to explore Western Australia by camper, you’ll quickly face a crucial question: Will a standard campervan suffice, do I need a pricey 4WD, or is renting a regular car and staying in hotels the better option?

In this guide, we share our experiences with renting a campervan in Perth. We break down the actual costs, compare the top rental providers, reveal exactly what you need to look out for during vehicle pickup, and explain everything you need to know about renting a camper in Western Australia.

4×4 vs. Campervan vs. Rental Car: Which Vehicle is Right for You?

The choice between a camper or a car in Western Australia will dictate your entire travel experience. Here is an honest comparison so you know exactly what you get for your money and can decide what best suits your WA adventure:

4WD (Four-Wheel Drive with Rooftop Tent)

  • The Biggest Benefit: Total freedom! Only with a 4×4 can you access WA’s spectacular locations, like the deep red sand of Francois Peron National Park, the remote gorges in Karijini National Park, or driving right onto the beaches at Cape Le Grand.
  • The Downsides: Sleeping in a rooftop tent can become uncomfortable and noisy due to the strong winds along the Western Australian coast. You always have to cook outside (which can be incredibly frustrating during Outback fly plagues), and you are entirely reliant on external restroom facilities. Furthermore, setting up and packing down the tent every single day is time-consuming.

The Classic Campervan (2WD / Motorhome)

  • The Biggest Benefit: Maximum comfort and weather protection. Your living space is always with you. You can cook inside (worth its weight in gold during bad weather and fly swarms!), often have an onboard toilet and shower, and enjoy a fixed bed. It’s ideal for a relaxed trip where you might want to chill inside the van in the evenings or during cooler weather.
  • The Downsides: You are not allowed (or able) to drive 2WD campers on unsealed dirt roads (with the exception of short access roads to official campsites). This means you cannot reach some of the most isolated dream beaches, for example, in parts of Exmouth.

Standard Rental Car

  • The Biggest Benefit: You reach your destinations faster and consume significantly less fuel.
  • The Downsides: Western Australia has very little infrastructure in the north (towards Coral Bay/Exmouth). Motels are extremely expensive (often 150 € to 250 € per night) and book up very quickly. You lose that authentic “Outback adventure feeling,” and you are tethered to external accommodations or forced to sleep in a ground tent.

Camper Rental Australia Costs: What Does the Road Trip Actually Cost?

To assist with your budget planning, here are realistic average costs for 2 people, which vary depending on factors like the season, school holidays, group size, insurance choices, and how far in advance you book. Renting a cheap camper in WA is difficult and often comes with risks, such as inadequate insurance coverage, which can end up being very costly.

Budget Camper

  • Depending on the travel season, expect to pay between $108 and $231 AUD per day (approx. 65 € to 140 €). Even the most basic campers rarely dip below $80 AUD per day in the low season.

Standard Campervan (with Shower/Toilet)

  • Approx. $180 to $330 AUD per day (approx. 110 € to 200 €).

Luxury Motorhomes (Large RVs)

  • If you travel during peak season in a luxurious motorhome, prices quickly climb to $350 to $450+ AUD per day (approx. 215 € to 275 €).

4WD Camper (4×4 with Rooftop Tent)

  • Premium providers like RedSands currently charge between $299 and $549 AUD per day (approx. 185 € to 330 €) for their two-seater 4WD campers.
  • Their even more luxurious model, the “Wanderer Luxe,” runs between $419 and $599 AUD per day (approx. 260 € to 370 €).
  • With providers like Crikey Camper Hire, prices start at $250 AUD in the low season and jump to $490 AUD per day (approx. 300 €) in the high season.
  • Generally, you must budget between $250 and $550 AUD per day (approx. 155 € to 340 €) for a 4WD vehicle in Australia.

Fuel Costs

  • Expect to pay between $1.90 and $2.40 AUD per liter for diesel/petrol in WA. A large camper or 4WD will easily consume 12 to 15 liters per 100 km on those long stretches.

Which Camper Rental Providers are Recommended in Western Australia?

There are numerous camper rental companies in Western Australia, and the market in Perth is huge. Here is an overview of the most common providers:

  • The Best Off-Road Experience (4WD): Providers like RedSands Campers, Crikey Camper Hire, or WA Experts are absolute premium specialists for WA. If you want to rent a reliable off-road camper in Australia, these are the go-to choices (superbly maintained Toyota Hilux/Landcruisers with top-tier equipment).
  • Solid Vans & Motorhomes: Apollo and Let’s Go Motorhomes offer massive fleets of classic vans. Maui sets the standard for newer, more luxurious models.
  • Budget Options: Jucy, Cheapa Campa, or Hippie offer mostly older, brightly colored vans that often have high mileage, but they are sufficient for tighter budgets. However, reviews for these are very mixed, and the lower price can come at the expense of vehicle quality and/or customer service.
  • Our Personal Experience: We booked a Star RV model (part of the Jucy group) through campstar. Despite their “Premium” promise, we unfortunately cannot recommend this provider. Both the condition of the vehicle and the local service left much to be desired.

Direct Booking vs. Rental Agencies

You can rent a camper in Western Australia directly or through various booking platforms. While brokers can offer good value for money, caution is advised regarding one critical point: With large, anonymous aggregators, you are often just piecing together cheap insurance policies. When problems arise locally, the fine print in their terms and conditions often reads: “We are only the broker; sort it out with the provider in Australia.”

General Travel Portals (Booking.com, Expedia)

You can book standard rental cars and sometimes campers via platforms like Booking.com (often via Rentalcars). These portals frequently offer third-party insurance (e.g., from Allianz or RentalCover) that is significantly cheaper than the rental company’s own insurance.

  • ⚠️ Warning (The Reimbursement Model): These insurance policies often do not apply directly on-site! If you have an accident in Australia, the rental company will charge the cost to your credit card. You then have to claim the money back from Allianz/Booking.com afterward.
  • The catch: You need an enormous credit card limit (often $5,000 to $7,500 AUD), as the rental company will block the full deposit amount on your card at pickup.
  • Warning for 4WDs: Standard insurance policies from Booking.com or Allianz almost always exclude driving on unsealed roads and damage to rooftop tents. This is problematic for genuine 4×4 road trips.

Specialized Camper Brokers (e.g., Motorhome Republic)

  • Dedicated Support: If you have a breakdown in the Outback (e.g., a dead battery), a specialized agency gives you someone on your side who can apply pressure on the Australian rental company to credit you for lost days.
  • Better Prices & Direct Insurance: They often receive bulk discounts and sell you the rental company’s own premium, in-house insurance policies. This means: In the event of damage, with a good agency, you simply hand over the keys and fly home (no stress with chasing subsequent refunds).

Checklist: Insurance & Vehicle Pickup in Perth

Here is an overview of what to look out for when renting a camper in Western Australia to ensure a smooth road trip and avoid nasty surprises at the end:

Insurance & Unlimited Kilometers:

  • When looking at rental companies in Perth with insurance, look for “Zero Excess.”
  • If you choose a policy with an excess (deductible), you must check your credit card limit in advance and ensure you can provide it, as the amount will be blocked on your card.
  • CRITICAL: Explicitly check if Windscreen and Tyre Cover are included. Stone chips on windshields are a daily occurrence in WA, and driving with a damaged windshield is illegal.
  • It is crucial to book Unlimited Kilometers. The distances in WA are vast, and cyclone-induced flooding can frequently force unplanned detours of hundreds of kilometers.

Luggage

  • No hard-shell suitcases! Bring soft duffel bags. There is absolutely no space for bulky, rigid suitcases in either a campervan or a 4WD.

The Handover (Your Most Important Moment!):

Take your time, thoroughly inspect the vehicle, and precisely document its condition before you sign anything:

  • Windows/Windshield: Have every single tiny stone chip documented.
  • Roof Hatches: Do they close securely and tightly?
  • Windows: Do the sliding windows jam? Are the fly screens completely undamaged?
  • Awning: Have them roll it out completely once.
  • 📸 Tip: Take a single, uncut video of the entire interior and exterior of the vehicle, along with detailed photos, to save yourself from arguments and unexpected costs upon returning the vehicle.
