4 Days in Puglia: The Ultimate Italy Road Trip from Bari

Puglia is the perfect destination for a long weekend getaway. Located in the southern heel of Italy, this region offers a brilliant mix of authentic historic towns, dramatic cliffside coves, and incredible local food. Puglia captivates travelers with over 800 kilometers of coastline, centuries-old olive groves, and historic baroque architecture. In this travel guide, we share our personal 4-day road trip itinerary starting from Bari, recommend a charming alternative to overpriced coastal hotels, and reveal how to avoid common car rental scams at the airport.

Arrival & How to Find Cheap Flights to Bari

The international airport Bari (BRI) is the main gateway for a road trip through Puglia.

Flights from Germany:

Departure Airports: Direct flights to Bari operate from several German airports, including Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden (FKB), Frankfurt (FRA/HHN), Munich (MUC), Düsseldorf (DUS), Berlin (BER), and Stuttgart (STR).
Airlines: Budget carriers like Ryanair and Wizz Air usually offer the cheapest connections. Eurowings and Lufthansa also operate direct routes to Bari.
Prices: Outside of school holidays and when booked in advance, budget flights with Ryanair (e.g., from FKB) can often be found for as low as 20 € to 50 € each way. During the summer months or when adding checked luggage, return prices typically range between 100 € and 250 €.
How to Find the Best Flight Deals: Use platforms like Google Flights or Skyscanner. Set up price alerts and stay flexible with your travel dates. Mid-week flights (e.g., Saturday to Tuesday) are often significantly cheaper than classic weekend trips from Thursday to Sunday.

Parking at the Departure Airport (Example FKB):

We caught a flight from Karlsruhe (FKB). The flight time is just under 2 hours. Parking at FKB costs around 20 € per day. In our experience, simply pulling a ticket at the machine upon arrival ended up being cheaper than booking a slot online in advance. Where to stay in Bari: The Perfect Base in Conversano

Instead of booking overpriced hotels directly in Bari or right on the crowded coast, we chose a base inland in Conversano. Conversano is a real hidden gem for a short trip to Bari. Since Bari doesn’t have a nice beach either, this was the ideal choice for us to visit other coastal towns like Monopoli and Polignano a Mare from there:

Location: Conversano (about a 30–40 minute drive from Bari).
Advantages: Significantly lower prices (~ 211 € for 3 nights). The town is a true hidden gem: very quiet, featuring beautiful authentic alleys and local boutique shops without the mass tourism crowds. From here, all coastal destinations are easily accessible.

The 4-Day Puglia Roadtrip Itinerary

Day 1: Bari City & Highlights

The drive from the airport to Bari city center takes about 20 minutes.

Parking: Parcheggio Sabba Porto right at the harbor (7 € per day, the machine accepts Apple Pay). From there, the historic old town (Bari Vecchia) is within short walking distance of 5 to 10 Mins.
Sights: Simply wander through the narrow streets. The alleys are beautifully decorated with flowers and quotes written on the walls. Local fruit stands sell fresh fruits like figs during the summer (Note: cash only!).
Arco Basso: The famous street where local grandmothers (“Nonnas”) hand-roll fresh orecchiette pasta right outside their doors. Make sure to visit in the morning, as the streets get empty later in the afternoon.

Day 2: Monopoli (Boutiques & Fishing Port)

Monopoli is a beautiful coastal town with a charming old fishing harbor and smaller beach sections along the cliffs. You will soon find a detailed blog about Monopoli linked here. Monopoli feels a bit more commercialized and pricier than Bari, but offers a great, vibrant atmosphere:

Beaches: There are several small rocky coves along the historic town walls. The few sandy beach sections get very crowded in the summer months.
Parking: Parcheggio Procaccia (Cost: 2 € per hour).
Restaurants: The selection of highly-rated restaurants in the old town center is limited. For dinner, making a reservation in advance is strongly recommended (e.g., at the popular Al Vicoletto).

Day 2: Polignano a Mare (Cliffs & Coves)

Polignano is world-famous for its iconic whitewashed houses built directly on steep limestone cliffs overlooking the azure sea. You will soon find a detailed blog about Polignano linked here:

Beach: Lama Monachile, the famous, highly photogenic pebble beach. Since it is a rocky cove, bringing water shoes might make sense.
Timing: Arrive around 9:00 AM. After that, the small beach gets incredibly overcrowded.
Parking: Parcheggio San Francesco. You can easily control and adjust your parking time via the EasyPark app on your phone. Costs: 1,5 € to 2 € per hour.

Day 4-5: The Trulli Houses of Alberobello

To finish your trip, take a drive to Alberobello in the Val d’Itria. The town is world-renowned for its traditional Trulli, the unique white round houses with conical stone roofs.

Tip without a rental car: Alberobello can also be easily reached via a direct regional train line operating from Bari central station (see below).

How to Extend Your Puglia Road Trip

For a compact 4-day weekend trip, this Puglia route was optimal. This way you experience the perfect balance of city life, culture, and spectacular coastal sections. We didn’t manage to visit Alberobello ourselves due to time constraints. Due to the tight 4-day schedule and the return flight times, it would have been too stressful.

So if you want to travel in a relaxed way, skip Alberobello for a 4-day trip and instead enjoy more time in Monopoli or Polignano. Since the towns are not far apart, you can easily swap them and leave out one of the other places instead. Of course, you can easily extend this route to 5 to 7 days to stay longer everywhere and have less driving stress or to relax at the beaches.

Further Stops for Your Puglia Road Trip

If you have more than 4 days or are planning a longer vacation, you can perfectly extend this route further south into the Salento peninsula:

Ostuni: Known as the “White City,” it perches on a hill and offers sweeping views over historic olive groves all the way to the sea (about 40 minutes from Monopoli).
Lecce: The “Florence of the South,” world-famous for its stunning baroque architecture and lively student culture.
Otranto & Gallipoli: The ultimate destinations for a true Puglia beach holiday, featuring fine sandy beaches and crystal-clear turquoise water in the deep south.
Matera: Located just across the regional border in Basilicata, but only a one-hour drive from Bari. It is world-renowned for its ancient cave dwellings (Sassi).

Car Rental Experience in Bari

Since Bari is primarily a port city without classic swimming beaches in the city center, renting a car is great to explore the region. We pre-booked a car via Check24, including fully comprehensive and theft insurance, for 116 € for 4 days. However, upon arrival at the off-site agency Galdierirent, we faced a massive issue:

Important: You must present the physical credit card of the main driver. Debit cards, Amex, and Apple Pay are strictly rejected for the security deposit. The name on the card must match the booking name exactly. Furthermore, physical driver’s licenses and IDs for all drivers are mandatory.

Because we only had our credit card saved digitally via Apple Pay on our smartphones, our original booking was rejected on the spot. We were forced to buy an expensive local policy directly at the desk (costing 195 € to 250 € for the exact same car), where the debit card was suddenly accepted after endless discussions, and in the end we paid for two bookings.

Shuttle Location: Budget providers like Galdierirent operate outside the terminal. Exit the arrival hall, turn left, follow the “Rent a Car” sign, and walk about 100 meters through the underpass to reach the shuttle pickup area.
Rental Car Agency: The process is chaotic and time-consuming, especially if you don’t speak Italian. To save time and stress, consider booking with a premium provider located directly inside the terminal building (e.g. Sixt).

Driving Experience in Puglia

Driving in Italian cities is chaotic. Traffic rules seem to be treated as mere suggestions, cars cut in and overtake from every angle. It requires absolute focus. Getting fully comprehensive insurance with zero deductible and theft insurance is highly recommended for peace of mind.

Parking mostly went smoothly. There are paid parking lots and sometimes the option to park on the street for free. But watch out: parking spaces outlined in blue are always paid, and parking is heavily monitored, especially in tourist spots.
