Port Louis Street Food Tour: Discover the Best Dishes

Do you want to know what the Mauritian cuisine really tastes like and learn something about the history of the island at the same time? Then you should definitely go on a streetfoodtour on Mauritius that takes you right into the heart of the capital Port Louis. Actually we are not the type for such city tours at all, but in hindsight this was the perfect opportunity to get to know the city authentically and discover the culinary diversity of the Creole cuisine at the same time. Besides local delicacies like Dholl PuriRoti or Gateaux Piment you will also learn many exciting things about the past, which makes the day a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Foodtour & Sightseeing

The tour offers a perfect mix of exciting stories about the city and delicious dishes that we had never tried before and probably would never have discovered without a guide. In a small group of eight to ten people the guide led us through the busy streets of the capital and shared much about the moving history of the country as well as the legendary dodos, the tree of life and the defining colonial era. Between the individual stops there were always small delicacies such as Rotipickled fruits with chili powderSamosasDumplings and Parates. For dessert besides the impressive street art in Chinatown we had Jian Dui which are Asian filled sweet sesame balls. The tour concluded at the large market hall where we tried a creamy bubbletea and had some time to browse.

Keep in mind however that Port Louis is a very hectic city which is unfortunately also characterized by a lot of poverty. Everywhere you will be approached by beggars again and again, which the guide also addresses sensitively during the tour. Every station had its very own character and showed us the Mauritian cuisine from a completely new side. At the end of the tour we were completely stuffed and let the day end in a relaxed way at the Caudan Waterfront.

Details & Price

The meeting point for the street food tour is the Caudan Waterfront shopping center where you can also park in the parking garage just around the corner. The tour costs 45 Euro per person and takes you on a route of about 4 kilometers through the city for around 3 hours, so you should definitely wear comfortable shoes. We chose a tour from Taste Buddies because they had by far the most reviews and the concept convinced us immediately. All food as well as water and entrance fees to the sights are already included in the price so that you get a truly versatile insight into the Creole cuisine. Our guide also did an excellent job and was perfectly familiar with the area as well as the history of the island.
